About the Department of Geography

Geography is a science that aims to make spatial analysis within the scope of human-natural environment interaction, helps individuals to recognize and perceive the environment, and contributes to the solution of natural and human-based problems. With its practical feature, it plays a guiding role in foreign policy and a decisive role in investments for economic and social purposes. It examines the relationship between man and the natural environment, and the geographical phenomena and events that occur due to this relationship. Geographical information has always been needed to organize, develop and disseminate spatial (local, national, global) and temporal information. Natural and human resources, which are important in the development of the country and the region, are within the scope of the basic study area of ​​geography. In addition, the real identity of this science has a quality that aims to eliminate spatial, social, economic and political inequalities and produces solutions for this purpose, as well as describing and explaining the perceived world.

As a matter of fact, the theoretical and applied teaching methods included in the curriculum of the Geography department greatly contribute to this.

The Department of Geography aims to train graduates who can comprehend and explain the reconstruction of space, have a way of thinking based on geographical information, and have the ability to use current technologies (Geographic Information Technologies). For this reason, students who graduate from the department are employed in public institutions such as Ministry of National Education (MEB), Higher Education Institution (YÖK), Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA), State Hydraulic Works (DSI), General Directorate of Highways, General Directorate of Meteorology and Ministry of Transport. they can be.

Chapter Introduction

Samsun University Department of Geography was established within the Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences with the acceptance letter of the Higher Education Council dated 11.02.2019 and numbered 9204. With the granting of the right to formal education at the undergraduate level to the Department of Geography, 62 students started their undergraduate education as of the 2019-2020 academic year. As of 2023, it continues its education and training activities with 228 undergraduate students and 27 graduate students.

There are four departments: Physical Geography, Human and Economic Geography, Turkey Geography and Regional Geography. There are a total of 7 teaching staff in the department, including 2 professors, 2 associate professors, 1 doctoral lecturer and 2 research assistants.
